How Swiss filtration expertise and Czech engineering came together to create a platform for the entire brewery

Some success stories begin with a single idea. Others take shape when different strengths come together at precisely the right moment. The story of Bucher Denwel belongs to the latter category.

On one side stands a tradition of Swiss expertise in beer filtration, built up over decades, brought into Bucher through FILTROX and subsequently developed on an international scale by Bucher Unipektin. On the other stands DENWEL, a Czech engineering company founded in 1997 that evolved into a highly specialised supplier of Cold Block technologies for breweries.

Behind both of these development paths are not only technologies and products, but above all people: master brewers and brewing engineers, process and mechanical engineers, automation and software specialists, welders and fitters, service technicians and project managers. Their knowledge and practical experience remain fundamental to transforming individual components into reliable, high-performing brewing processes.

Today, Bucher Denwel brings together the brewery business within the Bucher Unipektin Group. The combination of filtration, Cold Block technology, automation and engineering has created an offering that extends far beyond individual process steps: from brewhouse technology and hop management to yeast management, filtration and Cold Block processes, energy management, dealcoholisation, tanks, automation and complete turnkey brewery projects.

The first path: Swiss filtration technology joins Bucher

The roots of today’s filtration expertise date back to 1938, when Hans Schmid founded the “Fabrik Filtermaterialien Hans Schmid” in St. Gallen, initially producing filter materials. In 1946, the establishment of FILTROX Maschinenbau AG marked the beginning of filtration equipment manufacturing.

Over the following decades, FILTROX established a significant international position in filtration. In beer filtration in particular, the company developed extensive process expertise and a substantial global installed base. This know-how was not confined to technical drawings or plant concepts. It was embodied in specialists whose decades of experience had given them a profound understanding of the requirements of industrial breweries and of how filtration influences beer quality, yield, process reliability and economic performance.

A decisive milestone in the development of Bucher’s brewery business was the acquisition of the engineering activities of the FILTROX Group. At the end of 2012, FILTROX and Bucher Unipektin agreed on Bucher’s acquisition of FILTROX Engineering AG. The transaction was completed in 2013, after which the company operated as Bucher Filtrox Systems AG.

For Bucher Unipektin, this represented far more than an extension of its product portfolio. The acquisition brought with it the process and manufacturing know-how of the engineering business, its engineering activities and its expertise in designing and building complete filtration systems. At the time, the portfolio included candle filters, ceramic crossflow systems and horizontal filters, among other technologies.

The acquisition gave Bucher Unipektin direct access to the international brewing market and, at the same time, a technology platform that complemented its existing expertise in beverage processing and filtration exceptionally well. Bucher’s established global sales and service network further extended the reach of the beer filtration business.

Close to the Asian market since 1992

Bucher has had its own presence in China since 1992, when it opened a representative office in Beijing. This market presence was further strengthened in 2010 through the acquisition of Unipektin’s engineering business and Unipektin Equipment Co. Ltd.; in 2013, FILTROX’s Sales and Project Engineering activities in China were also integrated into the existing Beijing organisation. Today, the team in China supports Bucher Denwel’s brewery business and Bucher Unipektin’s fruit juice business, particularly through engineering, project execution, sales, commissioning and service for the Asian market. The plants and core process equipment are developed and manufactured at Bucher’s European centres of expertise and production facilities.

FILTROX Engineering initially became Bucher Filtrox Systems. The next stage of integration followed in 2017: Bucher Filtrox Systems AG was merged with Bucher Unipektin AG. Production was consolidated at Bucher’s headquarters in Niederweningen, while the filtration expertise continued in St. Gallen under the name Bucher Unipektin AG – Competence Center Filtration (CCF). St. Gallen thus remained an important centre for the process-engineering expertise built up over many years.

By this stage, the mission was clear: to develop and supply technologically advanced filtration solutions for breweries worldwide. These ranged from established filtration processes to modern crossflow technologies for beer recovery.

Effective beer filtration involves far more than simply removing solids from a liquid: it must balance beer quality, yield, process reliability, hygiene and economic efficiency.

Yet filtration represents only one part of the brewing process.

The second path: DENWEL and the world of the Cold Block

At the same time, several hundred kilometres further east, another company was developing with a different focus.

DENWEL was founded in the Czech Republic in 1997. From its origins in process engineering for the food and process industries, the company developed an increasingly strong specialisation in brewery technology. It combined process engineering, mechanical engineering, automation and plant engineering, gradually concentrating on the processes that are critical to the Cold Block of a brewery.

These included water deaeration, blending, carbonation and nitrogenation, yeast systems, additive dosing, CIP systems and flash pasteurisation. DENWEL did not merely design individual machines; it developed complete automated process solutions encompassing engineering, software, installation and commissioning.

A defining strength was the close integration of brewing-process expertise, engineering, automation and in-house manufacturing. Headquartered in Prague, with manufacturing in Havlíčkův Brod, DENWEL was a more compact specialist than Bucher’s already well-established international beer filtration business – with short lines of communication, considerable engineering depth and a high degree of flexibility in delivering customised solutions.

A brewer does not think in terms of individual machines and systems. What matters is how the processes work together – and, ultimately, the quality of the beer in the tank and in the glass. It was this understanding of the overall process that united DENWEL’s specialists with Bucher’s filtration experts.

The capabilities of the two organisations were an almost ideal fit.

From complementary strengths to partnership

Rather than beginning with an acquisition, the relationship first developed through cooperation.

From 2018 onwards, Bucher Unipektin and DENWEL approached the market together. At BrauBeviale, the Bucher Unipektin Competence Center Filtration presented its technologies for beer filtration, crossflow filtration and new membrane processes, with DENWEL as its cooperation partner for complete Cold Block solutions.

The strategic rationale was already clear. Bucher contributed its high-performance filtration systems, international market presence and extensive experience in global plant engineering. DENWEL complemented this foundation with the additional process stages required throughout the cold side of the brewery.

Specialists from both organisations increasingly worked side by side on joint projects. Individual technologies could thus be developed into coherent process lines.

For customers, this meant fewer interfaces between different suppliers. Filtration, water deaeration, blending, dosing, carbonation, nitrogenation, CIP and other Cold Block processes could be coordinated from the conceptual stage and designed as an integrated whole. Process design, automation, installation and commissioning could increasingly be considered as elements of one complete system.

What began as a cooperation developed over approximately three years into a close technological and professional partnership.

2022: Partners become one company

The logical next step followed in January 2022: Bucher Unipektin acquired 100 percent of DENWEL.

At the time, the Czech company employed around 40 people and was internationally established as a specialist in Cold Block equipment. For Bucher, the acquisition was therefore far more than the addition of further products. It closed a crucial gap in the process chain.

By combining Bucher’s existing filtration systems with DENWEL’s technologies, the company could now offer complete, integrated Cold Block process lines.

The integration also benefited from an established foundation of trust. The people involved already knew one another from joint projects. DENWEL’s management and employees were familiar to the Bucher teams through several years of collaboration and remained with the company. DENWEL became Bucher Denwel.

This continuity of expertise was of considerable importance. A significant part of technical know-how resides in people’s experience – in their understanding of brewing processes and product requirements, as well as in their ability to design, automate, manufacture and reliably commission process equipment.

The acquisition also enabled the brewery activities to be consolidated organisationally. Production and customer service were transferred to the Czech Republic, where engineering, manufacturing and service now work in close collaboration. At the same time, colleagues in Switzerland remain closely involved in project execution, contributing in areas including project management, sales, process engineering, R&D and commissioning.

The filtration expertise built up in Switzerland over many decades was not lost in this process. Instead, it became part of a broader technology platform and was combined with additional capabilities. Proven know-how, experienced specialists and an established international presence came together with the engineering and manufacturing capabilities of the Czech team.

Later that same year, Bucher Unipektin further strengthened its manufacturing base. In December 2022, Bucher Unipektin acquired the Polish company B&P Engineering Sp. z o.o., which today operates as Bucher Unipektin Sp. z o.o. in Przeworsk. In addition to equipment for the beverage industry, the company brought extensive expertise in stainless-steel fabrication and vessel manufacturing into the Group. For the brewery business, the site adds particular strength in customised stainless-steel and pressure vessels, including fermentation and storage tanks, yeast propagation tanks, mixing tanks and CIP tanks. This means that, alongside the skids and process systems engineered and manufactured by Bucher Denwel, key vessel components can also be produced within the Bucher Unipektin Group.

From different locations to one shared network of expertise

Today, the name Bucher Denwel represents Bucher Unipektin’s brewery business.
Bucher Denwel is headquartered in Prague. Havlíčkův Brod is home to production, engineering and a research and development centre. Combined with Swiss filtration expertise, the additional engineering and manufacturing capabilities within the Bucher Unipektin Group and its worldwide sales and service network, these operations form a shared network of expertise.
For breweries, this offers a significant advantage. Rather than having to integrate individual machines from different suppliers retrospectively, processes can be designed as a complete system from the outset. Mechanical design, process engineering, automation, energy consumption, hygienic considerations, service requirements and future expansion can all be considered together.
Above all, customers have a dedicated point of contact at Bucher Denwel who speaks the language of the brewery – from the technological challenges facing the master brewer in production to the commercial requirements of operations, maintenance and investment decisions.
Components become process lines. Process lines become complete plants.

2025: The platform expands – from the Cold Block to the complete brewery

In 2025, Bucher Unipektin acquired the business of the German company Banke GmbH in Taufkirchen (Vils). Banke was particularly well established in brewhouse technology as well as hopping and energy management for breweries. The existing team was retained and now operates as Bucher Denwel GmbH.

This acquisition strategically extended the portfolio into key Hot Block technologies. Brewhouse technology, hopping and energy management now complement the existing strengths in filtration and the Cold Block. Bucher Denwel can therefore supply breweries across most of the process chain.

Bucher Denwel GmbH in Germany also strengthens the company’s presence in Germany and Austria while further expanding its existing network of expertise and service capabilities.

More than the sum of its parts

Looking back, the development follows a clear strategic trajectory. Step by step, a strong specialist offering in filtration evolved into a comprehensive brewery technology portfolio.

Yet the true value of this development cannot be measured solely by the number of technologies offered or plants installed. What matters is how they work together.

A master brewer does not think of beer as the sum of individual pieces of equipment, but as the result of interconnected processes – like a composition in which every ingredient and every step is carefully aligned with the next.

This is one of Bucher Denwel’s key strategic strengths: technologies are not merely supplied. They are engineered together, coordinated with one another and integrated across the entire process chain.

For customers, this means clear responsibilities, fewer interfaces and a single point of contact. Above all, it means access to a team that understands not only equipment, but brewing processes.
