Energy management
for breweries
With our pioneering concepts, we set a new benchmark for energy consumption, for both new and existing brewery production plants.
Energy management as a core element of modern brewhouses technology
Efficient energy management is a decisive factor in modern brewhouses technology. Rising energy costs, sustainability targets, and increasing competitive pressure require breweries to optimize thermal processes without compromising wort quality or production flexibility. Advanced brewhouse technology therefore focuses on intelligent energy recovery, reuse, and system integration throughout the entire brewing process.
Optimized thermal energy use in the brewhouse
In the brewhouse, thermal energy demand is mainly driven by mashing, wort boiling, and wort cooling. State-of-the-art energy management solutions enable breweries to reduce thermal energy consumption in the brewhouse to below 4 kWh per hectolitre, setting new benchmarks for efficiency and sustainability. This is achieved through systematic recovery of high-temperature energy and its reuse in subsequent brewing steps.
A key principle is the recovery of wort cooling energy at the highest possible temperature using fresh brewing water. The recovered energy is stored in a high-temperature energy storage tank and reused for mashing in later brews. In parallel, energy from wort boiling is recovered via a vapor condenser to generate high-temperature water, which is also fed into the energy storage system. This approach maximizes exergy efficiency, ensuring that energy is reused at the most valuable temperature level.
Flexible energy concepts for new and existing brewhouses
Modern brewhouses technology must be adaptable. Advanced energy management systems can be integrated not only into new greenfield brewhouses but also retrofitted into existing plants with minimal conversion effort. This flexibility allows breweries of all sizes to benefit from reduced energy consumption, fast payback times, and long-term operational savings.
The energy concept is compatible with all common energy sources, including steam boilers, combined heat and power (CHP) units, and renewable energy systems such as solar thermal solutions. This makes it easier for breweries to align brewhouse technology with their individual sustainability strategies and CO₂ reduction goals.
Sustainable, economical and brewery-specific solutions
Energy-efficient brewhouses technology is always tailored to the specific brewery. Batch size, brew sequence, recipe portfolio, and quality requirements are considered during planning and implementation. The result is a customized energy management solution that combines:
- Sustainability through active resource conservation and reduced CO₂ emissions
- Economic efficiency with low total cost of ownership and short payback periods
- Technical excellence without negative impact on wort quality or brewing consistency
Whether for modernization projects or complete turnkey brewhouses, intelligent energy management is a key driver for future-proof brewing operations.
